Our Mission
The Gananoque & District Humane Society (GDHS) is a volunteer run, no kill cat shelter that takes in abandoned or surrendered cats. All of our adoptable cats are neutered / spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated prior to being available for adoption. We do not receive guaranteed funding and rely on the generosity of our community.
Our Story
GDHS was established in 1989 as a volunteer-run, no-kill humane society serving the town of Gananoque and the surrounding area (specifically the former Front of Leeds Township, now part of Leeds & the Thousand Islands).
In 1992, GDHS became a full-service affiliate of Ontario SPCA (the provincial animal welfare organziation), affirming its commitment to animal protection under the recognized standards.
The organization is incorporated as a not-for-profit charity under Ontario law and is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) — meaning it operates legally as a charitable organization and can issue tax receipts for donations. Charitable number 891915431RR0001
A Community Built on Compassion
Behind every cat we help is a team of dedicated volunteers, foster families, and a small staff committed to giving every cat the care, safety, and love they deserve.
Our volunteers generously donate their time to care for the cats, adoption events, support fundraising efforts, and help keep the shelter running. Our foster families open their homes to cats and kittens, providing a safe, loving environment while they prepare for adoption.
GDHS receives no guaranteed government funding. The care we provide is made possible through the generosity of our community. Every donation, fundraising event, grant, sponsorship, and act of kindness helps provide food, litter, veterinary care, medications, enrichment, and shelter for the cats who depend on us.
Whether you volunteer, foster, donate, or simply help spread the word, you are making a meaningful difference. Together, we are giving abandoned, stray, and surrendered cats the care they deserve and the opportunity to find loving forever homes.
