Our Adoption Process

1️⃣ Apply
Fill out our adoption application so we can get to know you and your home.

2️⃣ Review & References
Our adoption coordinator reviews each application, conducts reference checks, and completes a telephone screening interview to ensure the best possible match.

3️⃣ Schedule a Visit
Once approved, we’ll contact you to book an appointment to meet the cats and kittens in care.

4️⃣ Meet the Cats & Kittens
Already have a favorite from our website? Great! You’ll meet that kitty and others during your visit. Our free-roaming lobby and romper room cats make for a fun, relaxed, and interactive experience.

5️⃣ Adoption Day
If it’s a match, we’ll finalize the adoption and send you home with your new feline family member ❤️

Approved Application
  • GDHS will typically contact you within 24–48 hours to schedule a visit to the shelter. This visit allows us to get to know you and help find the best possible match. If it’s a good fit, you may have the opportunity to complete the adoption and bring your new cat home the same day. If a match is not found, your approved application will remain on file for three months.

Denied Application
  • If your application is not approved, it does not reflect your ability as a pet owner. Reasons for denial may include concerns regarding veterinary history, including lack of routine vaccinations or annual wellness care for current or previous pets. The Gananoque & District Humane Society reserves the right to decline any application and is not obligated to provide a reason

Thank you for your interest in adopting through GDHS.
